Oberammergau Passion Play is a passion play performed since 1634 as a tradition by the inhabitants of the village of Oberammergau, Germany. It happens every 10 years and the next performance it is scheduled for summer 2020.
It is probably one of the most famous Passion Play in the world and it attracts visitors from everywhere. Packages including tickets to the performance and accommodation are sold years in advance to international tourists. The impact on the practicability of the region is expected to be huge.
The Passion Play will be performed in the little village of Oberammergau, located in the in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in South Bavaria. Due to the extent of the event (more than 500,000 visitors are expected), the whole Bavarian region will be affected, including Innsbruck and Salzburg.
The play will take place every day (except for Mondays and Wednesdays) for 5 months from May through October – first performance on May 16 and closing performance on 4th October – for a total of 103 performances.
It will start at 2:30 pm and end at 10:30 pm every day, with an intermission of three hours for dinner.
Visitors unable to get accommodation in Oberammergau will book their stay in the closest cities in the region and attend the performance thanks to the numerous transfers specifically organised for the event.
