A large fire has damaged a part of Hallstatt, the beautiful 16th-century village in Austria. Tourists have been asked to avoid the town centre if possible, while local authorities commence the reparation works.

Located 80 km from Salzburg, Hallstatt is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Austria, with more than one million visitors each year. It is famous for its picturesque half-timbered houses and the beauty of its setting between lake and mountains.

The fire has completely destroyed at least four buildings and damaged the surrounding ones. The Mayor has asked the tourists to avoid the centre, while the Salt Mine and the Skywalk remain open. Cruises on the Lake Hallstatt are not guaranteed.
